Marie Belle Koontz Frey, 89, of Elkton, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024 at Journeys Crossing in Elkton. She was born November 12, 1934, in Page County and was the daughter of the late Olan and Viola Mauck Koontz.

On August 10, 1957, she married David W. Frey, who preceded her in death on June 17, 1986. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen K. Grimes and brother-in-law, Donald O. Grimes.

Marie was an active, lifelong member of the Elkton United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was president of the Elkton United Women in Faith, served on the Administrative Council and Board of Trustees. Marie was also on the Worship committee and was in charge of preparing communion each month and having fresh flowers for the altar every Sunday. She was a beloved teacher for Rockingham County Public Schools and touched the lives of countless children by teaching first and second grades at Elkton Elementary for 43 years before retiring in 1999. She was a member of the Rockingham County Education Association and the National Education Association. Marie was also a member of the Elkton Historical Society, the Elkton Garden Club and the Milnes Chapter No.3 Order of the Eastern Star.

Marie and David did not have any children of their own, but they had “godchildren” that they loved dearly like their own. Marie is survived by those special godchildren, Joan Painter of Elkton, Nancy P. Fries (Wayne) of Elkton, Nick Fries, Alex Fries (Autumn), Matthew Fries, Mackenna Fries, David Fries, Beau Fries and Robert Fries; Bonnie W. Huggins (Andy) of Harrisonburg, Megan Young, Madison Young and Brad Young; Lisa W. Ladisic (Michael) of Atlanta, GA, Rachel Ladisic, Clara Ladisic; Margaret Ladisic and Annie Ladisic, Ike Flory (Lisa) of Chesapeake, Carole F. Reed (Andrew) and Zack Flory, Bill Flory (Sheryl) of Manakin Sabot and Ivy Flory.
