RICHMOND, Va – A measure that would end Virginia’s issuance of two license plates honoring Robert E. Lee and spotlight the Sons of Confederate Veterans is headed to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s desk.
The Senate passed Delegate Candi Mundon-King’s bill on a 21-17 vote despite Goochland Senator John McGuire the Third’s argument that the law would violate the First Amendment on Free Speech.
Under the legislation, the state would stop issuing that design, although holders of both those plates would be free to use them until their expiration date.
The governor has not indicated whether he will sign the bill or not.
