VERONA, VA (WSVA). — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating two separate instances of potential criminal violations by staff members at the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center.

In a release, Lieutenant Leslie Snyder said that authorities were contacted by the center’s director last week about multiple improprieties by staff involving inmates.

Snyder says investigations later revealed that staff were involved in two instances where “contraband,” or illegal cell phones were given to inmates.

Investigators also discovered that some staff had accepted money in return for extra food or preferential treatment for a particular inmate.

The sheriff’s office did not say if anyone has been charged or arrested, citing the ongoing investigation.
