BRIDGEWATER VA: (Rocktown Now) – The WSVA High School Football Game of the Week lived up to its billing Friday night as the Broadway Gobblers defeated the Turner Ashby Knights, 34-27, in a thrilling three-overtime showdown between two previously unbeaten teams.
Turner Ashby struck first, but Broadway answered as the teams traded momentum throughout the first half and into the second half. Neither squad was able to create much separation, and when regulation came to an end, the rivals were tied at 21-21.
The drama continued into overtime as both teams matched each other score for score. Broadway and Turner Ashby each converted field goals in the first overtime and again in the second, leaving the score deadlocked at 27-27 and forcing a third extra period.
The Gobblers finally broke through on the opening play of the third overtime when quarterback Brendan Glovier connected with Elijah Campbell on a 10-yard touchdown pass, giving Broadway a 34-27 advantage.
Turner Ashby had one final opportunity to extend the game. The Knights drove inside the red zone and faced a fourth-down play with the game on the line. Quarterback Cooper Smith targeted a receiver in the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete, allowing the Gobblers to celebrate the hard-fought victory.
The win improves Broadway’s record to 7-0 and extends the Gobblers’ unbeaten season, while Turner Ashby suffers its first defeat and falls to 5-1.
