STAUNTON, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia located on Richmond Road in Staunton will celebrate International Archaeology Day on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with a full day of interactive archaeological activities from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

International Archaeology Day reportedly highlights the role archaeology plays in helping us better understand the people who came before us. While history relies on written records to document human behavior, archaeology examines the objects people made, used, and left behind, providing tangible evidence that helps fill in the story of everyday life.

“One of the things that makes the Frontier Culture Museum so unique is its ability to connect visitors with history in meaningful and engaging ways,” said Shannon Sankar, owner of Standout Arts, agency of record for the Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia. “International Archaeology Day gives families an opportunity to explore how artifacts, research, and living history come together to tell the stories of the people who lived here centuries ago.”

Throughout the day, visitors will explore the Museum’s Old World exhibits while learning about different types of artifacts, including metal objects and ceramics, and discovering the role of experimental archaeology. In the American section of the Museum, guests will have the opportunity to try their hand at excavation in interactive dig boxes and learn what happens after artifacts are uncovered.

Designed for visitors of all ages, the event provides engaging opportunities to explore the science of archaeology while discovering how archaeological research supports the Frontier Culture Museum’s living history interpretation.

Admission is included with General Admission and is free for Annual Pass holders.
