COLLEGE PARK, Md. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison field hockey (0-1) mustered up a strong comeback attempt but ultimately fell just short in a 2-1 season-opening defeat at the hands of Temple (1-0) on Friday afternoon.

Puck Jansen led all players with five shots, putting three shots on goal and the managing the Dukes only score of the game in the third period from the penalty spot. JMU recorded 13 shots to Temple’s nine and doubled the Owls up in penalty corners six-to-three.

How It Happened
• Temple drew first blood at the tail end of the first period as Brooke Weaver capitalized off an Owls penalty corner and scored from the back post.
• James Madison received their first penalty corner at the 22nd minute as Jansen lunged the ball forward at the net but it was saved by Temple’s goalkeeper.
• The Owls doubled their advantage in the second frame when Riley Gallagher put one through.
• In the 41st minute, JMU was awarded a penalty stroke. Jansen answered the call, placing one in the top left corner of the net to cut the Dukes’ deficit in half.
• The Dukes continued to put forth a worthwhile rally attempt as JMU notched five shots in the fourth period.

Game Notes
• JMU saw a seven game winning streak in season openers come to an end.
• Lilly Sweeney managed three saves in goal, two of which came in the second half to keep JMU’s comeback attempt alive.
• JMU and Temple drew even in the shots on goal department with each side managing five apiece.
• Head Coach Alyssa Parker begins her coaching career in College Park, Md., the same place she was a two-time conference champion as a player.
