ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — A Luray man is in custody after fleeing the scene of an alleged rape and abduction.

The Page County Sheriff’s Office says their Investigation’s Division received a request for assistance at 4:30am on Monday, July 20 from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office in reference to an alleged abduction and rape investigation. RCSO reported that the alleged abduction occurred in Rockingham County, and the alleged rape occurred in Page County.

Officials say during the investigation, the suspect, identified as Shawn Seal, 34, of Luray, was located at the Valley Mountain Motel parking lot in Shenandoah and when investigators approached, Seal fled the area with deputies initiating a pursuit that led into Rockingham County from Page County.

The suspect’s vehicle was stopped on I-81 by Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police units. Seal was taken into custody after a brief stand-off.

In addition to charges by other jurisdictions/agencies, Seal has been charged by the Page County Sheriff’s Office with the following offenses:

§18.2-47 – Abduction

§18.2-61 – Rape

§ 18.2-67.3 – Aggravated Sexual Battery

§ 46.2-817 – Eluding

Currently, additional charges are pending further investigation.

UPDATE (3:27pm): Virginia State Police Spokesman Matt Demlein reports that the suspect, 34-year-old Shawn Seal of Luray, faces felony eluding charges from Virginia State Police.

UPDATE (10:24am): A suspect in a rape and abduction in Page County is in custody after a pursuit Monday morning.

Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson says the suspect fled from Page County into Rockingham County at around 9am, where the pursuit continued westbound on Route 33. Police deployed spike strips in the Cross Keys area.

Hutcheson says the suspect vehicle was disabled, but continued West into Harrisonburg and proceeded North on I-81 as the Virginia State Police assumed the lead role in the pursuit.  The vehicle crashed into the ditch in the vicinity of the 249 mile marker Northbound.

The Sheriff says a brief standoff ensued as attempts were made to get the individual to safely exit the vehicle and a short time later he was arrested safely without injury.

Additional details will be released in the future regarding the suspect and the charges.

UPDATE (10:12am): Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson is reporting that the incident that closed down all northbound lanes on I-81 in the 9 o’clock hour this morning was caused by the pursuit of an individual.

UPDATE (9:55am): One lane of I-81 has reopened.

Harrisonburg Police are reporting due to an accident in Harrisonburg on I-81, all northbound lanes are closed. The accident is at mile marker 249 and traffic is being diverted to East Market Street.
