HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) Officer Elijah DeAtley has graduated from the Forensic Science Academy hosted by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science.

This nine-week course reportedly includes a vigorous academic program, and students are evaluated by class performance, written tests, application of recovery techniques and homework assignments. Course material includes crime scene investigation, arson evidence, toxicology, forensic biology, latent print evidence, firearms evidence and bullet trajectory, crime scene sketching, and criminal investigative analysis.

According to HPD officials, The Virginia Department of Forensic Science Academy equips law enforcement professionals with advanced training that supports thorough, accurate investigations when incidents affect the community.

During the program, Officer DeAtley expanded his knowledge of crime scene processing, evidence recovery, and the many forensic disciplines that help uncover key facts in an investigation.

“Officer DeAtley is bringing back an incredible skill set to the department, and his hard work in this course will benefit the community greatly during criminal investigations. His new skills will help the department continue serving the Harrisonburg community with professionalism, care, and a strong commitment to public safety,” said Chief Joe Tucker.
