ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia’s drought situation is showing signs of improvement, according to the latest update from the U.S. Drought Monitor. The share of the Commonwealth classified in “extreme” drought has dropped from 36 percent to 25 percent. Even so, the central Piedmont remains the hardest‑hit region, with 98 percent of Albemarle County and all of Louisa and Fluvanna counties still in the extreme category.

Conditions have eased slightly in the central Shenandoah Valley and northern Piedmont. Most of Rockingham, Madison, and Augusta counties have been upgraded to “severe” drought, which remains a serious concern for agriculture and water resources. Shenandoah and Page counties are now listed in “moderate” drought.

The latest drought report was released on Thursday, June 4.
