MOUNT SIDNEY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Augusta Water has acquired Seawright Springs, a historic water source located near Mount Sidney, Virginia. The purchase was completed following a foreclosure auction held on April 21. The property was previously owned by Flow Beverages, Inc.
With this acquisition, Augusta Water now owns all three major Augusta County springs located north of Staunton along the Interstate 81 corridor. The purchase includes approximately 140 acres across five tracts.
According to a release, Seawright Springs has long been recognized as a significant water source, with documentation dating back to colonial times and formal studies beginning in the 1920s. A 1978 study conducted for the Virginia State Water Control Board identified the springs as producing around a million gallons per day or more.
“We are very pleased to have this outstanding water source,” said Phil Martin, Executive Director of Augusta Water. “Owning this spring strengthens our future plans in the Verona-Weyers Cave system, provides redundancy, and offers protection against the effects of future droughts. While the spring is not needed to meet current demand, and there are no current plans to develop the spring or property, this acquisition positions us very well to support future needs of residents from Verona to Mount Sidney and into Weyers Cave.”
