ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — A school bus crash shut down Route 33 in Rockingham County this morning.
At 8:47am, Battalion Chief Doug Gooden says units were dispatched to the 5000 block of Spotswood Trail/Route 33 in Penn Laird in response to reports of a single-vehicle accident involving an overturned school bus.
“ECC had received several calls about a school bus on its side,” Gooden said. “When I got there, in fact, the school bus had overturned, and all the occupants were out at that point in time.”
Due to the driver experiencing what Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson describes as a “medical situation,” the eastbound bus ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned.
Two students, an aid, and the driver were all transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was charged with Reckless Driving – Failure to Maintain Control.
RCPS officials say they “appreciate the care and professionalism shown by our transportation staff and first responders throughout the situation. The accident remains under investigation by law enforcement, and we will continue to cooperate fully while also reviewing all safety procedures as part of our standard process following any transportation incident.”
