HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – A week after twirling his first quality start of the year, James Madison freshman Tyler Lutz repeated the performance with a season-long 7.0 innings to lead the Dukes to a 5-3 win over Marshall to win the series on Sunday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference baseball at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Dukes improved to 20-26 (10-14 Sun Belt), while the Thundering Herd fell to 21-26 (11-13 Sun Belt).

Junior Ike Schmidly brought in two runs, while senior Wyatt Campbell, junior Josiah Seguin and redshirt sophomore Clay Thompson each went 2-for-4.

Lutz earned his third win of the year on the mound and senior Jaden Kinsler ended the game with a perfect inning of work for his third save of the season.

How It Happened
First Inning
It took Schmidly one at bat to put the Dukes ahead, taking a 1-1 pitch the opposite way for his 11th homer of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Third Inning
Sophomore Jack Anderson led off the inning with a single and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt, setting up junior Kyle Langley to double him in.

Fifth Inning
Marshall got on the board with a groundout that followed a lead-off triple.

Schmidly regained JMU’s two-run lead with a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.

Sixth Inning
Thompson led off the sixth with his team-leading 18th double of the season and then scored on Campbell’s single up the middle.

Eighth Inning
The Herd used a pair of base hits to put runners in scoring position with no outs and then used a groundout and a single to make it a 4-3 ball game.

JMU responded with an RBI single from Thompson to extend the lead once more to two runs.

Game Notes
• Tyler Lutz’s 7.0 innings is the longest outing by a Duke since Max Kuhle tossed a complete game on May 2 last year at Georgia Southern.
• The Dukes have set the single-season program record for sacrifice hits with 57.
• With runners in scoring position, the Dukes hit .444 (4-for-9).
