GROTTOES, VA (Rocktown Now) — Firefighters battled a significant house fire Thursday in a wooded area of Augusta County.

Division Chief Colten Lotts said- that, around 1pm, units were dispatched on reports of a heavy column of smoke on the 300-block of Paine Run Road in Grottoes.

“When the first arriving unit from Dooms Volunteer Fire Company arrived, (they) reported a structure fire with fire showing and also a large portion of the woods behind the structure on fire as well,” Lotts said.

After determining no occupants were inside, crews worked to extinguish the flames in both the house and the surrounding woods and remained on site into the late afternoon suppressing hot spots throughout the property.

A firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated on-scene.

While the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, the investigation remains ongoing.
