HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Astronauts involved in the NASA Artemis program have named a crater on the moon in honor of Carroll Wiseman, the late wife of mission commander Reid Wiseman.

The newly designated “Carroll Crater” serves as a tribute to Carroll Wiseman, a 1995 graduate of James Madison University. A pediatric nurse practitioner, she studied biology during her time at the university and was also a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.

According to mission officials, the naming recognizes both her personal impact and the broader human connections that continue to shape space exploration. Situated on the far side of the moon, Carroll Crater is described as a bright feature against the lunar surface.

The dedication comes as Artemis astronauts and NASA continue preparations for future missions aimed at returning humans to the moon and advancing long-term exploration goals. Officials say the naming underscores the role of personal stories and legacies in shaping the next era of space discovery.
