AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Craigsville man following an incident allegedly involving reckless driving and a pursuit.
Authorities say that on Friday, March 6, 2026, at approximately 4:23 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a reckless driver traveling on Parkersburg Turnpike in the Westview area toward Staunton.
An Augusta County deputy who was in the area observed a Chevrolet truck driving recklessly. When the deputy activated his emergency equipment and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver continued into a nearby subdivision.
The deputy then located the vehicle off Pine Tree Lane, where the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. After a short foot pursuit, the deputy was able to take the driver into custody without further incident.
The driver was identified as Lloyd Preston Knight, 63, of Craigsville, Virginia and charged with the following offenses:
- 46.2-301 – Operating a motor vehicle with a revoked/suspended license
- 46.2-817 – Misdemeanor eluding law enforcement
- 46.2-852 – Reckless driving 18.2-460(E) – Attempt to flee from law enforcement
Knight is currently being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.
“Reckless driving puts everyone on the roadway at risk. I am proud of the quick response and professionalism displayed by our deputy in safely apprehending this individual and preventing a potentially dangerous situation from escalating further,” said Sheriff Donald L. Smith.
