HARRISONBURG, Va. – Virginia U-S Senator Tim Kaine made an appearance in Harrisonburg Thursday morning to celebrate over 14 million dollars in federal funding meant to make the Friendly City friendlier to non-drivers.

The money is allocated through the federal RAISE program, and supports a plan to build two separated bike lanes over a roughly one-mile stretch along Noll Drive and Liberty Street downtown.

Speaking alongside Mayor Deana Reed, Kaine said only about 15 percent of RAISE grant applicants were awarded funding, including Harrisonburg.

Public works director Tom Hartman says that the project will take about a year to complete after construction crews break ground in 2027.
