VERONA, Va. — Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith announced last night that he will seek re-election for a third term.
Smith said during an event last night at the Verona Fire Hall that the county has improved under his watch. The office regained accreditation in March eight years after losing that status under former sheriff Randy Fisher.

The current sheriff said that if re-elected, his goals include fostering relationships and adding positions within the sheriff’s office.
Regarding what’s become a controversial issue surrounding body cameras, Smith said the technology is a luxury – not a necessity. Late last month, the Augusta County Board of Supervisors voted down a proposal that would have hiked real estate taxes by one cent to fund the purchase of these cameras.
Smith added that he also wants to establish a crisis stabilization center for folks experiencing mental distress.
