NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Four James Madison lacrosse upperclassmen have been named All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association, the organization announced Thursday. Redshirt senior Mairead Durkin and redshirt junior Isabella Peterson were named to the First Team while redshirt senior Rachel Matey and senior Tai Jankowski were named to the Third Team.
JMU earned four IWLCA All-America honors for the first time since 2000, and the quartet combined for nine All-America accolades across three organizations, which included Consensus First Team awards for Durkin and Peterson.
Durkin finished her JMU career with a stellar season on defense, causing 47 turnovers and grabbing 37 ground balls. She caused multiple turnovers in 15 games. Durkin finished with the JMU all-time record for caused turnovers, with 135, and was just five caused turnovers short of her own 2022 single-season record. She was instrumental in helping JMU to a 7.86 scoring defense, third-best in the nation.
The Stony Point, N.Y. swept First Team All-American awards between USA Lacrosse Magazine, ILWomen and IWLCA. She was also named a Tewaaraton Award nominee and the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Peterson set several JMU records on her way to a 91-goal, 114-point season. She set single-season records in both goals and points and already owns the JMU career record for goals (223) and points (275). She had 18 hat tricks in 2023 and had three performances of at least seven goals, none bigger than netting seven with two assists in a 15-14 come-from-behind victory against Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Championship on May 14.
She also reached 90 draw controls for the second straight season. Heading into NCAA Championship weekend, Peterson is first in the country in goals and second in both points and shots (185).
Like Durkin, Peterson swept First Team All-American awards in 2023 and unanimously took The American Attack Player of the Year. She also became JMU’s fourth Tewaaraton Award finalist and will represent the program as one of five finalists at the awards ceremony on June 1.
Matey finished her five-year JMU career with high marks on both defense and the draw, finishing with a team-leading 48 ground balls and 91 draw controls to go with 24 caused turnovers. She set the program’s career record in draw controls with 288 and finished fifth in single-season marks in draw controls and tied for 14th in ground balls.
The Phoenixville, Pa. native was selected as an Honorable Mention All-American by ILWomen on May 18 and was also a Tewaaraton Award watch list selection and First Team All-AAC this spring.
Jankowski put up career numbers on the attack with 53 goals and 23 assists for a total of 76 points, netting 10 hat tricks this season. Her 53 goals finished tied for 10th in JMU history. She was also precise from the eight-meter with a 20-for-26 clip (76.9%), the second-best percentage in the nation.
The New Jersey native’s All-America selection is the first of her career. She also earned career-firsts with a Tewaaraton watch list honor and as a First Team All-AAC pick.
The All-American group helped the Dukes to their second-most wins as a program, with a 19-3 overall record. JMU won the American Athletic Conference regular-season title outright and reached the conference tournament final. The Dukes went on to reach their 11th NCAA Championship quarterfinal.
JMU is currently No. 7 in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division I rankings, having earned a top-10 spot in every poll dating back to March 6 and reaching as high as No. 4.
