WASHINGTON – James Madison lacrosse redshirt junior Isabella Peterson and redshirt senior Mairead Durkin have each been selected as one of 25 Tewaaraton Award Nominees, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Thursday.
Peterson has been named a Nominee for the second straight season while Durkin hauled in her first Nominee selection. JMU has multiple Tewaaraton Nominees for the third time in program history, with two selections each during the 2003 and 2018 seasons.
From the attack position, Peterson has scored 60 goals and added 18 assists for a total of 78 points, notching 12 hat tricks and seven performances of five or more goals this season. She ranks fourth nationally in total goals and is tied for fifth in points. Peterson has also grabbed 64 draw controls, good for sixth-most in the American Athletic Conference.
She has already earned several accolades this season including AAC Attacker of the Week four times and USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Player of the Week on Feb. 28.
On defense, Durkin has led the way all season with 37 caused turnovers, most in The American and tied for fourth-most total in the country. She has caused multiple turnovers in 12 games in 2023. Durkin has also picked up 24 ground balls, with multiple in seven games this season.
The Stony Point, N.Y. native has helped a defensive unit that has allowed just 7.33 opposition goals per game, third-best in the country. JMU has allowed fewer than 10 goals to 12 of its 15 opponents this season and has limited six different opponents to fewer than 20 shots.
Durkin has collected two Defensive Player of the Week honors from The American this year including this past Monday after grabbing four caused turnovers and four ground balls in Sunday’s win against Cincinnati.
Thursday’s announcement of the 25 Nominees follows a Watch List that also included defender Rachel Matey, goalkeeper Kat Buchanan and attacker Tai Jankowski in addition to Peterson and Durkin. Five finalists will be selected from the 25 Nominees on May 11.
James Madison is currently on a 14-game winning streak for a 14-1 overall record and has picked up a No. 4 ranking in three straight ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Polls.
The Dukes are back in action on Sunday, April 23 with a 1 p.m. road matchup against Rutgers.
