“Prescribed burn” is a term Valley residents normally hear a lot of this time of year. One is actually burning right now in northern Page County, near Luray.

Although the flames will die out this evening across 400 acres of Indian Grave and Seakford Fields, the National Forest Service says the sight and smell of smoke may linger in the area for several days.

District Ranger Mary Yonce told WSVA that while these burns may be inconvenient and even scary to watch, destruction is often necessary to bring desolate areas back to life.

Yonce added that Hardy County residents in West Virginia should look out for another prescribed burn in the coming weeks.
