RICHMOND, Va. – Ten of the 18 James Madison hits went for extra bases to help lead it to an 11-8 win over Richmond at Pitt Field in non-conference baseball on Tuesday afternoon.

The Dukes improve to 17-11 while the Spiders drop to 12-17.

Redshirt junior Sean Culkin earned his first win of the season behind three innings, striking out two and allowing two runs. At the plate, sophomore Fenwick Trimble tied a career-high in hits with a 4-for-5 effort, knocking in a run and hitting three doubles and three runs scored.

How It Happened
First Inning
The Dukes struck first on a Trimble double to score Cone who led off with a single. Trimble then scored on a Trevon Dabney sacrifice fly before graduate Jaylon Lee singled in freshman Mike Mancini who reached on a double.

Second Inning
With one out, sophomore Jason Schiavone and graduate Jack Cone hit back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to five. Dabney capped the inning for a 6-0 lead with an RBI groundout.

Three straight singles by UR got it on the board, followed by a ground out to score a second run. The Spiders then cut the deficit in half with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly.

Third Inning
Lee made it a 7-3 game with a leadoff homer for JMU.

Fifth Inning
Richmond made it a two-run game, hitting its own homer off the bat of Johnny Hipsman before scoring a fifth run of the game on a double.

Sixth Inning
JMU pushed three runs across in response, loading the bases with no outs before Mancini singled in a run. He then stole second with the catcher’s throw bouncing into center field to allow redshirt senior Kyle Novak to score. Freshman Wyatt Peifer then hit a single to right field to plate Mancini.

Eighth Inning
For the second time in his collegiate career, Lee homered for the second time in a game. He took a 1-2 pitch with two outs over the left field wall for an 11-5 lead.

The Spiders got a run back on a bases loaded walk to make it 11-6.

Ninth Inning
The hosts went down swinging, hitting a two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to make it 11-8. A strikeout from redshirt junior Hunter Entsminger though ended the game.

Game Notes
• The Dukes hit four home runs, the most as a team since hitting four against Northeastern on April 16 last season.
• Jaylon Lee’s only other multi-home run game came on March 30, 2021 against Washington & Lee. He is the first Duke to have a multi-home run game since Travis Reifsnider against William & Mary on April 23 last season.
• Every starter for the Dukes recorded at least one hit.
• JMU hit four home runs and six doubles for its 10 extra base hits.
• Jason Schiavone has now homered in back-to-back games and is riding a season-best five-game hit streak.

The Dukes welcome Georgia State to Veterans Memorial Park for a three-game set from April 6-8. First pitch for Thursday’s opener is slated for 6 p.m.
