ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Rockingham County Public Schools will issue bonuses to all contracted employees in August, using newly allocated state funds designated for SOQ (Standards of Quality) instructional and support positions.

While the state funding formula recognizes approximately 1,170 positions, RCPS currently employs more than 2,200 contracted staff members. Providing a $1,000 bonus to all full-time employees and $500 to part-time employees would have required an additional $1.2 million in local funding, an amount not presently available.

“After careful consideration, the School Board made the decision to distribute the available funds across all contracted employees,” said Dr. Larry Shifflett, Division Superintendent. “This approach allows us to recognize the dedication and hard work of our entire RCPS team.”

The approved bonus structure is as follows:
● Full-time contracted employees will receive $525
● Part-time contracted employees will receive $250

Bonuses will be included in the August 20, 2025 payroll for all current 12-month and 11-month employees, as well as for returning 10-month staff members.

“While we are not in a position to supplement the state funds with local resources, this solution enables us to honor and appreciate the efforts of all employees to the greatest extent possible,” said Dr. Shifflett.
