BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Bridgewater College women’s lacrosse team fell in a closely contested 15-13 contest against Southern Virginia at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Aunnie Hacker scored the first goal of the game after her shot was deflected behind the SVU goalie just a minute into the game. Bridgewater added two more goals on a free-position man-up shot from Lauren Roberts and a strike from Annika Benson off a feed from Kaity Petersheim to put the Eagles up 3-0 less than two minutes into the quarter. The Knights scored their first at 12:08 from Tyler John to cut into the lead. Roberts got her second of the game with eight minutes to go in the period before Benson scored her second with 6:44 on the clock. Both teams got one more as Alissa Johnson and Roberts each tallied a goal as the Eagles led 6-2 after the first 15 minutes.

• John started the scoring in the second quarter followed by Roxy LeBaron cutting the deficit down to 6-4 with 12:26 left in the half. Roberts scored another one off a Benson assist, but Kiah Baisden kept the Knights within a pair of goals at 7-5. Hacker tallied her second after Jenna Entsminger caused a turnover and passed it over to make it an 8-5 game, but Southern Virginia scored twice in the last five minutes of the second quarter to make it an 8-7 game at halftime.

• In the second half, Johnson scored twice to push the Knights into the lead at 9-8 with 11:14 on the clock. Petersheim got one back to tie the game again, but Baisden and Rylee Webster went back-to-back to make it an 11-9 game in favor of the visitors. Roberts kept the Eagles in it with a goal with under four minutes to play in the third quarter but less than 30 seconds later, John scored again to maintain the two-goal advantage for SVU. After a card was administered with 15 seconds left in the period, Roberts found the back of the cage for her second man-up score of the evening to make the score 12-11 going into the final quarter of regulation.

• The Eagles struck twice with a goal from Madeline Magill and Benson – both assisted by Roberts – to go ahead 13-12 with 7:53 remaining in regulation. The Knights tied the game at 6:58 and scored again 40 seconds later to go in front, 14-13, and added one more insurance goal with under 2:30 left in the contest.

GAME STATS
• Roberts led the team with an eight-point game off six goals and two assists to go with 11 draw controls. She also picked up one ground ball.

• Benson registered a four-point night with a hat trick and an assist, while Hacker and Petersheim each had two points with Hacker scoring twice and Petersheim sporting a goal and an assist. Entsminger and Magill each had one point with an assist and a goal, respectively.

• Petersheim caused two turnovers to lead the team, while Tavin Krick, Olivia Lawrence, Kelli Mullen and Aubrey Beale also registered a CT. Krick grabbed three ground balls, while Magill, Benson and Hacker had two apiece.

• Rachael Robinson made 12 saves and snagged five ground balls in all 60 minutes, while Jessica Webb made eight saves in the victory.

• Johnson led the Knights with six goals, while John tallied four of her own. Johnson had six draw controls and Josie Skopec was right behind her with five.

• Southern Virginia outshot Bridgewater 37-29 and held a 22-18 advantage in ground balls.

UP NEXT
The Eagles return to the field on Saturday, March 25 with its ODAC opener against Randolph. The road game is set to begin at 12 pm.
