HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – The Harrisonburg Police Department has responded to reports of approximately 30 vehicle break-ins since May 21 in the area of Blue Stone Hills Drive, Emerald Drive and Purple and Gold Way.

Preliminary investigations suggest that, in the majority of these incidents, vehicles were left unlocked and valuables such as electronics, wallets, purses and personal items were left in plain view. In some cases, thieves gained easy access to glove compartments and center consoles, quickly taking advantage of the opportunity provided by unlocked doors.

“We are urging all community members and visitors to lock their vehicle doors and remove valuables whenever they leave their cars unattended,” HPD Captain Jason Kidd said. “Crimes of opportunity like these can often be prevented with simple precautions.”

HPD reminds the community of the following vehicle safety tips:
• Always lock your doors and close all windows when leaving your vehicle.
• Never leave valuables in plain sight. If you must leave them in your car, secure them in the trunk or a concealed area.
• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
• Report any suspicious activity immediately by calling the HPD non-emergency line at (540) 434-4436 or dial 911 in case of an emergency.

The department has increased patrols in affected areas and is actively working to identify suspects through surveillance footage and community tips. Neighbors and those living close by are encouraged to check their home security cameras and doorbell cameras for footage of the offenders, particularly between the evening of May 21 and the early morning hours of May 22.

Even small pieces of information can be extremely helpful in identifying suspects and preventing further incidents. If you notice anything suspicious or relevant, please report it to HPD as soon as possible.
