FARMVILLE, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison sophomore Kyle Langley set career-highs in hits and RBIs and the pitching staff held Longwood scoreless through seven innings to earn an 8-2 win in non-conference baseball at Buddy Bolding Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Dukes improved to 11-22 while the Lancers fell to 9-24.
Langley went 3-for-5, his first career three-hit game, while adding a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. His two runs scored tied a season high. On the mound, classmate Griffin Madden earned his first career win as he started and went two innings while striking out five of the eight batters he faced.
How It Happened
First Inning
JMU built momentum right away, as senior Ryan Dooley led off with a walk before classmate Coleman Calabrese hit his team-leading 10th double of the season. Langley then laced a single back up the middle to score both runners for the first runs of the game. After stealing second and moving to third on an error on the throw down, Langley touched home plate to make it 3-0 on freshman Jack Anderson’s groundout.
Third Inning
Junior Wyatt Peifer led off the inning with a double before Calabrese singled him in to give JMU a 4-0 lead.
Fifth Inning
The combination of Langley and Anderson struck again to add two runs to give JMU a 6-0 lead. With a Duke on third, Langley hit a double to knock in the runner before Anderson drove in the Arlington, Va. native with a single.
Sixth Inning
A safety squeeze from Peifer brought home a run, as junior Maddux Fleck led off the inning with a double ahead of scoring to make it 7-0 in favor of JMU.
Eighth Inning
Longwood used a trio of two-out singles to get on the board, successfully utilizing a hit-and-run to score a run with JMU out of position to make it 7-1.
Ninth Inning
The Dukes used its own trio of singles to get a run back, with Langley getting the final single for his third hit of the game to knock in Dooley and make the score 8-1.
LU put another run on the board, leading off the ninth with a triple ahead of a single that made it 8-2.
