HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – The City of Harrisonburg is looking to make exiting Pointe Drive onto South Main Street safer with a new traffic pattern.
A 300-foot acceleration lane will be installed beginning in early April in the center of South Main Street, starting at Pointe Drive. The installation of delineators will provide guidance on how travelers may utilize the new configuration properly and safely.
These changes will provide the following:
• Travelers who wish to turn left onto South Main Street from Pointe Drive will now have a two-stage left option that provides more time and space to safely maneuver onto South Main Street.
• Delineators at East Kaylor Park Drive (just south of Pointe Drive) will enhance the left turn restriction to ensure safe operations at this intersection.
“Because this corridor is heavily traveled and exiting Pointe Drive can be difficult at times, we have identified this improvement for travelers making a left-hand turn,” Harrisonburg Public Works Transportation Planner Jakob zumFelde explained. “Although our team is dedicated to evaluating and finalizing projects to improve the South Main corridor, we are glad that we are able to make these adjustments that will help travelers of Pointe Drive in the meantime.”
Changes are expected to take place during nighttime hours, when traffic is light, in early April. Road marking removal will take place the evening of Thursday, April 3, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., with an expected completion of Friday, April 4.
Delineators are expected to be installed at night, April 9 to 10, and thermoplastic road markings are expected to be installed during the day, April 10 to 11. During work, one lane of traffic will be closed at a time, however the road will remain open to through-traffic during the entirety of the project
