NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Detectives in Newport News have finished their criminal investigation into the shooting of first grade teacher and James Madison University graduate Abigail Zwerner by a six-year-old-student.
Police chief Steve Drew said during a “Chat with Chief” social media segment that the case is now in the hands of a local prosecutor for review.
Drew said the community, and the nation, shouldn’t draw comparisons between this case and a similar case last week when another six-year-old in Norfolk brought a weapon to school, leading to almost immediate charges for the mother.
He said those two cases are “apples and oranges” because no one was harmed in the most recent case, while Zwerner was critically injured.
