HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) –The Harrisonburg City School Board approved the Resolution opposing House Bill 899: The Termination of the Department of Education during last night’s meeting.

Vice Chair Tim Howley said that if the bill is enacted it would have consequences for the schools and that federal programs help schools.

“Eliminating the U.S. Department of Education would put these essential resources at risk,” said Vice Chair Howley. “It could mean a loss of funding, a reduction in accountability, and uncertainty for the families who rely on these programs.”

According to the Resolution document, the School Board requests a meeting with 6th District Congressman Ben Cline, co-sponsor of House Bill 899, to discuss its potential implications for the students and community. Superintendent Dr. Michael G. Richards said that he has communicated with Congressman Cline’s office but has not had a formal meeting.

“That invitation is still open and being considered,” said Dr. Richards. “That’s all I can say about that at this time.”

The measure passed in a majority vote. School Board Member Kaylene Seigle abstained.
