The House narrowly passed a measure by Broadway Delegate Tony Wilt that will give the State Corporation Commission more authority to protect the state’s grid reliability.
Wilt explained on the floor that with Virginia having to follow California’s emissions standards of having 35 percent of vehicles sold be electric vehicles by the year 2026, there needs to be enough electricity on the grid to handle it and his bill would allow the S-C-C more time to extend that timeline if it threatens reliability of electric service.
Opponents of the measure say the Clean Economy Act does not threaten the reliability of the grid.
The bill passed on a party-line 52-47 vote and will move over to the Senate where it faces an uphill climb.
