SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) – The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to protect their families from online threats like scams, identity theft, and cyber bullying in observance of “Safer Internet Week.”

Captain Whitney Mauk said precautions must be taken to avoid becoming a victim of internet crime.

“Be cautious when clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown sources,” Captain Mauk said. “Regularly monitor your bank or credit accounts for suspicious activity. Talk to kids and teens about safe internet habits and set parental controls.”

Captain Mauk adds that it’s important for internet users to have unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication when possible.

If something seems suspicious, don’t respond, report it immediately to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office at sheriff@shencosheriff.com or (540) 459-6100.
