LEXINGTON, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College men’s basketball team fell to Washington & Lee 73-60 on Wednesday night.
Records: Bridgewater 8-11 (3-7 ODAC); Washington & Lee 6-12 (4-5 ODAC)
How It Happened
• Washington & Lee jumped on the board first, but a Steve Burgess three-pointer put BC in front right after. The Generals responded, but another long ball, this time by Jordan Cooper, gave BC the lead back. The Generals evened the game with a layup and did not look back as a 9-0 WLU run gave Washington & Lee a 13-6 lead seven minutes in. Will Dunlap stopped the run with a layup and followed with a three-pointer after a long ball from WLU. Cooper finished off a 7-3 Bridgewater run to slice the lead to just a score at 16-13, but a Connor Amorosi three-pointer pushed the lead back to two scores.
• A Woody Machado layup and a Will Dunlap three-pointer cut the gap down to just a point at 19-18 with 10 minutes to go in the half, but three unanswered three-pointers by the Generals pushed the lead to double figures for the first time all night at 28-18. Cooper got the Eagles back on the board, but a score by Colin Ryan and another WLU long ball stretched the gap to 13 points with 4:28 to play. Khalil Ward and RK law drained a three-pointer each for the Eagles to cut into the lead, but a pair of makes at the charity stripe by the Generals gave the home team a 35-26 lead at the half.
• Each side traded scores for the first five minutes of the second half before a Ward dunk and a Machado score cut the deficit to 45-39. Both teams continued to trade scores until a Ryan score and another Generals deep ball pushed the lead to 58-45 with 9:22 to play.
• Bridgewater responded with a Dunlap score and an Aaron Oates three-pointer to cut the gap to eight points with eight minutes to play, but WLU caught fire and combined that stingy defense for an 11-0 run over the next 4:37 to take a 69-50 lead with 3:32 to play. A Machado three-pointer ended the run for a moment, but a make at the line and another long-range make gave the Generals a 20-point advantage with under two minutes to play. Oates got the Eagles back on the scoreboard and sparked a 7-0 run over the final 1:42, but it proved to be too little too late.
Game Notes
• Cooper led the Eagles with 14 points and four assists. Oates and Machado each grabbed six rebounds while Oates, Ward and Dunlap all tallied two steals. Dunlap tallied a career-high 13 points in his homecoming to Rockbridge County.
• Ryan led WLU with 19 points and eight assists. Thomas Feigin made six three-pointers for the Generals as well in the win.
• The difference came at the free throw line as WLU shot 10-of-11 at the stripe while BC was 1-for-4. WLU also had a slight edge from the field at a 53.1% clip compared to a 47.2% mark for BC.
