CONWAY, S.C. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison women’s basketball held Coastal Carolina to season lows in three-point percentage (8.3) and field goal percentage (26.8) to overpower the Chanticleers, 74-54, on Saturday afternoon inside the HTC Center.
JMU (15-4, 7-0 SBC) scored 52 points in the paint to snap Coastal Carolina’s (13-4, 4-3 SBC) nine-game home winning streak and produced back-to-back wire-to-wire wins. With the win, the Dukes are off to their best ever in Sun Belt play since joining the league in 2022.
Peyton McDaniel notched her fifth double-double of the season and 13th in her career with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kseniia Kozlova also achieved a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 boards to go along with one block. Ro Scott registered 13 points and three assists off the bench, while Ashanti Barnes added another 13 points and a team-best three steals. Zakiya Stephenson added eight points and five rebounds in the win.
For Coastal, Alancia Ramsey recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, pacing the Chanticleers in both categories. Savannah Brooks recorded 14 points and four boards, while Jayden Marable chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.
How It Happened
First Quarter – JMU 17, CCU 12
• McDaniel found Kozlova under the basketball for a quick layup as the Dukes went on an 8-0 run to make it 10-4 and force an early CCU timeout.
• A steal and fast-break basket by Scott gave JMU a 17-7 at the 1:12 mark as part of a 5-0 spurt. The Chanticleers responded with a 5-0 run of their own, including a driving layup from Jaylen Ponder with under one second to go to cut the deficit to five (17-12).
Second Quarter – JMU 33, CCU 21
• JMU held the Chanticleers to one of their last seven from the field and one of their 13 from three to lead 26-16 at the media timeout.
• At the half, CCU was held to 7-of-35 from the field (.200) and 2-for-21 (.095) from three. Conversely, the Dukes shot 14-of-30 (.467) in the opening twenty minutes.
Third Quarter – JMU 50, CCU 32
• The Dukes went ahead by as much as 19 (44-25) following a behind-the-back pass from Scott to Barnes in transition near the midpoint of the frame.
• CCU connected on just 4-of-20 (.200) from the field and 1-of-12 (.083) from deep
Fourth Quarter – JMU 74, CCU 54
• Even offensive outputs resulted in a 62-44 score at the media timeout.
• The Dukes shot 9-of-16 (.563) from the field to coast to the 74-54 victory.
Game Notes
• James Madison is 5-1 in the all-time series against Coastal Carolina and has won the last three matchups.
• JMU held an advantage in points in the paint (52-28), bench points (20-12), second chance points (16-13) and fast break points (13-8).
• The Chanticleers finished the game 3-for-36 from three-point range and 19-of-71 from the field.
• Coastal’s 54 points marked a season low and just the second time finishing with under 60 this season.
• McDaniel and Kozlova both earned double-doubles, the first time during the 2024-25 campaign in which two Dukes have had double-doubles in the same game and the first since Kozlova (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Hevynne Bristow (10 points, 10 rebounds) against South Alabama on Feb. 7, 2024.
• The Dukes grabbed 51 rebounds, the second-most for the team this season behind a 55-rebound performance versus Gardner-Webb on Nov. 17, 2024.
• The last time JMU started better than 7-0 in conference play was during the 2017-18 campaign when Head Coach Sean O’Regan’s squad began the season 10-0 as members of the Colonial Athletic Association.
