HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Harrisonburg Senator Mark Obenshain thinks Virginia should not be taxing tips, so he and fellow Republican Senator Ryan McDougle introduced legislation Friday morning to put an end to what he calls an unfair practice.
Obenshain says he sees this as an opportunity to stand up for working Virginians as well as work across the partisan divide.
“We saw during the Presidential campaign that this was an idea that was embraced by both candidates,” Obenshain explained. “I challenge my friends on the Democratic side of the aisle to follow the example of their national brethren and embrace this. I think this is a win-win for Virginia workers.”
Obenshain added that tips are money earned by workers, not the state.
Lawmakers will convene in Richmond on January 8th for the start of the General Assembly session.
