Wanda Faye Shifflett (Herring), 75, deeply loved and deeply loving, passed away at 2:45 am on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 in her home with close family by her side. Wanda was born on July 8, 1949, in Elkton, Virginia, to the late Everett and Duan Herring. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Roger.
Anyone who knew Wanda can attest that she fought the good fight and she finished the race, even though we miss her dearly already.
Wanda lived in Elkton her entire life. As a young adult, she worked as a retail purchaser for Legget in Harrisonburg. She went on to become a substitute teacher and library clerk, following her daughters through school. Once retired, she worked at Massanutten Resort and one of her favorite jobs she held was being a Washington DC tour guide–boy, was she good at it.
Wanda was very committed to Elkton Pentecostal Church and the church family she had there. She spent countless hours directing the church Christmas plays for many years and found much fulfillment in sharing the love of Jesus with others. It’s fitting that her last job was serving as secretary of the church.
Wanda lived her life with generosity, sacrifice, purpose, and a dedication to serving others around her, without ever hoping for anything in return. Her heart was full of love and joy for her children and grandchildren and her best role may have been as “Gammie” (grandma). She considered God to be her rock, followed by her husband Mark. She loved crab legs, tending to her garden, Christmastime, visiting the beach, and going on adventures with her husband Mark, sister Beverly, and her kids. She loved cannolis, playing cards with friends, trips to NYC, her pups John Wayne and Susie, her pet chickens, and of course, QVC.
Wanda leaves a legacy of love that will outlive us all, but that currently resides in her husband Mark; three grateful daughters, Stacey Breeden (Tracey), Kristy Clifford (Robert), and Tara Davis (Craig); stepson, Michael Davis; and eight beloved grandchildren: Matthew May (Katie), Ryan May (Stephanie), Brooke Erbaugh (Kyle), Davis Clifford, 12, Genevieve Clifford, 10, Grace Clifford, 5, Finn Davis, 5, and Jovie Davis, 1. She is survived by 7 great-grandchildren. Wanda is also survived by her siblings Ronald “Bucky” Herring (Frances), Juanita Conley (Clee), and Beverly Lam (Timmy).
A celebration of Wanda’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2024 at Elkton Pentecostal Church with Pastor Eddie Byers officiating. A visitation with the family will be at 12 p.m. (the casket will remain closed). The service will be followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, and then a reception at the Elkton Pentecostal Church fellowship hall.
Wanda had a sparkle wherever she went and we know we will still find that glimmer each day as her legacy lives on in each of us she touched and shaped. We look forward to joining her for homemade biscuits and gravy, plus a funny story or two, one beautiful day.
