Frances “Jean” Smith Harper, 92, a resident of Hinton, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Bell Aire at Stone Port.
Mrs. Harper was born on January 17, 1932, in Rockingham, VA, to the late Lester Adkins and Sara Frances Knicely Smith. Frances dedicated a significant part of her life to serving the children of Mt. Clinton Elementary School, where she worked in the cafeteria for 22 years. Prior to her years in the cafeteria, she worked for 6 years at Southern Bakery. Outside of her work, she always made a point to keep up with her grandkids and great grandkids and all the activities they were involved with. She was the heart and soul of her family, which she led with strength, wisdom, and endless love. Frances was also a devoted member of Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church.
On December 22, 1948, she married Paul Delmar Harper, who preceded her in death on May 4, 2009.
Surviving are her sons, Dennis Harper and wife Linda of Rockingham, Bruce Harper and wife Janet of Dayton; brother, Ray Lynn Smith and wife Ellen of Rockingham; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by her daughter, Paulette Riggleman; siblings, Nancy Wheelbarger, Leroy Smith, Lester A. Smith Jr; granddaughter, Julie Harper; and a great grandson, Travis Harper.
Pastor Stacy Meyerhoffer and Gerald Harper will conduct a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Cooks Creek Cemetery.
Those wishing to may view and sign the register book from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the home of Bruce and Janet, 2837 Honey Run Road, Dayton, VA, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday October 9, 2024, and Sunday October 13, 2024.
