Dorothy Elaine Arey Kasten, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, in the Bridgewater Retirement Community.
Dorothy was born just before her twin brother, Donald, on February 10, 1933 to the late Bernard Huffman Arey and Lola Conner Arey of 150 Ott Street, Harrisonburg, VA.
She graduated from Harrisonburg High School and then Catawba College where, as a woman, she had to fight to attend chemistry classes. She earned a degree in Medical Technology from the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU).
While working in Richmond, she met Daniel Rohne Kasten who she married on September 13, 1958. Over the years, they lived in Cambridge, MD and Woodstock, VA where they raised three sons. Daniel preceded her in death on June 9, 2012.
In 1991, they retired to Massanutten Village. She volunteered with “People Helping People” in Harrisonburg for 23 years and played the Mountain Dulcimer.
Dot is survived by two brothers, Donald and Laird; one sister, Bernie; three sons, Erick (Elaine), Mark, and Daniel Jr.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m., on Monday, October 14, 2024, at St. Stephen’s UCC, 358 S. Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA with Pastor Dan Bassett and Pastor Craig Janney officiating.
