AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Augusta County Sheriff’s is investigating the death of an inmate at Middle River Regional Jail.

In a release, Sheriff Donald Smith said the Augusta County Emergency Communications Center received a call from Middle River Regional Jail for an unresponsive inmate at 2:50am yesterday. Rescue personnel from Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad and Augusta County Fire and Rescue responded. The jail medical staff and jail officers administered life saving measures and CPR until rescue personnel were on scene 10 minutes later. First responders continued life saving measures but were not successful. The victim has been identified as 43-year-old Billy Joe Woods, of Swoope.

Sheriff Smith says this is an ongoing investigation and no further details will be released at this time.
