HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The city of Harrisonburg kicked off a 30-day public comment period for the new homeless center during last night’s city council meeting.

Deputy City Manager Amy Snider is the lead project director for the presently named Homeless Services Center.

However, she proposed that the name be changed to the Navigation Center.

“I think that this definition encapsulates what we are trying to achieve with our facility,” Snyder said. “It’s a housing-first low barrier service and rich shelter focused on moving people into permanent housing that provides temporary living facilities, while case managers connect individuals experiencing homelessness to income, public benefits, health services, shelter and housing.”

The public comment period will end on August 24 and city council is expected to pass a resolution renaming the center at its August 27 meeting.
