Rev. Clarence Marshall Moyers, 95, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
He was the son of the late Daniel H. and Ida Julia Kline Moyers, born April 28, 1929, in Broadway, Virginia.
On August 15, 1953, he married Sarah Elizabeth Mason Moyers who preceded him in death on May 30, 2022. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillian V. Yoder, Martha F. Swick and Joyce C. Moyers, and two brothers, Allen S. Moyers, and Weldon “Kline” Moyers; four nephews, Don Hollett, Gene Yoder, James Hollett and Reedy Mason.
He is survived by a daughter, Dwynn Elizabeth Stovall and husband, Carl Anthony “Tony” of Bridgewater; a son, Donald Craig Moyers and wife, Virginia “Ginny” of Timberville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Stovall “Beth” Michael and husband, David, and William Marshall “Bill” Stovall and wife, Rebekah; great-grandchildren, Ellie, Lincoln, Diana, Levi and one expected in August, as well as six nieces and seven nephews.
Rev. Moyers graduated from Broadway High School in 1947. He attended Bridgewater College, received his B.A. Degree from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and his B.D. Degree from Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He was ordained to the ministry in his home church, Linville Creek Church of the Brethren, Broadway, Virginia in May 1952.
He served as Assistant-Youth Pastor of the Mount Claire Congregational Church in Chicago, Illinois; Pastor of the Maple Grove, Laughlin and Bethesda Churches of the Brethren, Grantsville, Maryland; First Church of the Brethren, Rocky Mount, Virginia; Troutville Church of the Brethren, Troutville, Virginia; Barren Church of the Brethren, Staunton, Virginia; Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren, Westminster, Maryland. Following retirement, he served Garbers Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Clarence was active in the local Ministerial Associations in the communities where they lived. He served on the Church of the Brethren District Board and other committees. He was one of the founding members of the Franklin County Choral Society, Franklin County, Virginia; member of the Roanoke County Valley Chorus, Roanoke, Virginia and the Choral Arts Society of Carroll County, Maryland; the Shenandoah Valley Choral Society, Harrisonburg, Virginia. He served as President of each of these Choral Groups for a period of time. He was also an Associate Chaplain at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg for over 13 years.
He and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth, shared together in many areas of ministry in the congregations where they served. They moved to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (Park Village) in March 1992. In January 2024, he moved to Crestwood Assisted Living following many years of living on Shank Drive. Together they served on the Activities Committee, Clarence served as Chair for nine years. He also served on several committees at V.M.R.C.
Since retiring from the ministry, they were active members of First Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg, serving as Deacons and Clarence singing in the church choir.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren, 315 South Dogwood Drive in Harrisonburg, with the Rev. Marty Doss, Dr. Ron Wyrick, and Chaplain Carmen Miller officiating. A meal will take place at the church, following the service, for all who wish to attend. Interment will be private at Linville Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Broadway with Pastor Paul Roth officiating.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
