Sarah McCue Starkey, 97, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024 at Sunnyside Retirement Community.

Sarah was born October 29, 1926 in Turtle Creek, PA to the late Edward Crawford McCue and Bernice Lucey Jones. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN with a degree in Registered Nursing. She continued working as a nurse until she married Thomas Worcester Starkey of Duluth, MN on January 14, 1950 in St. Louis, MO. After living in Duluth, MN and Memphis, TN she and Tom retired to her historic and beloved family farm, Belvidere, in Ft. Defiance, VA. Sarah and Tom’s final years were spent living at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, VA.

Sarah is survived by her sons, Thomas McCue Starkey of Medford, NJ, and David Moore Starkey and his wife Iris Garner of Kernersville, NC; brother, Edward McCue of MN; grandchildren, Tricia Starkey of NC, Lauren Starkey of Washington DC, Shaun Starkey of NJ, Daniel Starkey and Matthew Starkey of NC; great-grandchildren, Gwynneth Ward of MA, Cece Ward and Maisie Ward of VA, Campbell Starkey, Eli

Starkey, and Miles Starkey of NJ, Alexis Starkey and Jordan Starkey of NC.

Besides her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by a sister Eleanor Davis and her husband Thomas Worcester Starkey.

Sarah was known by her friends and family as a consummate homemaker who loved her role as a mother and wife who modeled love, encouragement, and devotion in every aspect of her life. She was active in church, enjoyed traveling with her husband Tom, and throughout her life excelled at cooking, participating in garden clubs, DAR, ceramics, painting, sewing, smocking, etc. Sarah delighted her grandchildren who found her an untiring source of loving patience, fun, and creativity.

Funeral services will be privately held at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg VA with burial at the Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ft. Defiance, VA.
