HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Senators reconvened for a special session yesterday in Richmond, but not a whole lot was accomplished.
One of the topics that was supposed to be discussed was a bill to reverse recent cost-cutting measures imposed on a program that allows some military families to get tuition-free college.
However, lawmakers spent the whole day in Richmond without taking up a single bill.
That did not please Harrisonburg Senator Mark Obenshain, who says part of the problem is that lawmakers made a promise to the veteran community.
“We haven’t put our money where our mouth is,” Obenshain said. “We have an unfunded promise to the veterans and their family members of the Commonwealth of Virginia. We passed this program and said to colleges and universities: ‘you just suck it up.'”
The Senate is expected to reconvene on Friday afternoon where they may discuss the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program.
