HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – June is Wound Care Awareness Month.

Dr. Nina Smith, the medical director for the Wound Healing Center at Sentara RMH, told Rocktown Now that, like all medicine, treating wounds has now become an art.

“We look at the whole patient, which is important,” Smith said. “Yes, they have a wound, but why and how can we prevent them from coming back with the same problem? So we look for diabetes, vascular problems, renal failure. So, not only do we try to heal the ulcer, we tried to prevent it from ever coming back.”

The American Board of Wound Management Foundation designated June to raise awareness about wound healing and recognize the challenges faced by individuals dealing with chronic wounds.

Throughout the month, they highlight the work of wound care specialists and provide educational resources.
