HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is taking part in a federal program this summer that aims to connect underserved kids with the nutrition they need while school is out.

The Food Bank announced last week that it will participate in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, which will provide children in 13 locations with healthy food that they might not be able to access otherwise.

Spokesperson Les Sinclair explains what’s on the menu.

“Wholesome breakfast items, vegetables, fruit dishes, protein and meat and other sources or snacks; and it’s provided to the girls and boys clubs as well as summer school programs, churches and recreation programs that serve children at risk of being food insecure,” Sinclair said. “This nutritious food is provided to all children without charge – it helps children thrive and stay on track for healthy development.”
