Wilmer Allen Olinger, 90, passed away on August 3, 2024 at Timberview Crossing, Timberville, Va.
He had been living independently at his home for about 20 years. He was born June 4, 1934 the son of Allen and Gladys Olinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wanda Barb Olinger, a sister Anna Olinger Jameson and a granddaughter Justeen Olinger.
He is survived by daughter Kim Olinger of New Market, and sons Jim Olinger (Penny) of Timberville, and Kirk Olinger (Fay) of Woodstock, Ga, grand-daughter Amber Olinger of New Market, grandson Brett Olinger (Ali) of Richmond, Dr. Daria Olinger of Manassas, Althea Olisina (Seyi) of Charlotte, NC, Aaron Olinger (Emily) of Radford, Va, Ivy Olinger attending University of Tennessee, Chattanooga OT school, Maielle Olinger attending the University of Maryland Dental School, great grandchildren Grayson, Finley, and Seth, a brother Eldon Olinger of New Market, sisters Frances Olinger Earman of Harrisonburg, and Brenda Olinger Rice (Danny) of New Market, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of New Market High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. Wilmer worked for many years as a Highway Inspector for the Virginia Department of Highways overseeing the building of I-81, I-66, and I-64 as well as other road related projects. He spent 19 years at Kennametal while also maintaining an active farm. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in New Market where he served on the Church Council and was always available to help on any project. He was very civic minded being a member of the New Market American Legion where he served as Commander, marching in many parades, assisting with funerals of veterans, taking veterans to hospitals, etc. He was also on the Board of Directors of the New Market School Association. He loved square dancing and participated with the Plains Promenaders Square Dance Club well into his 80’s.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at Sentara/RMH, Lifecare Center of New Market, and the entire staff at Timberview Crossing for their love, care, and comfort given to him during the past several months.
There will be a memorial service held at a later date.
