William (Bill) Claiborne Ingram, 79, of Harrisonburg, VA passed away suddenly at his home on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Bill was born April 20, 1945 to Louise Via Ingram and Frank Clayburn Ingram.

After graduating George Washington High School in Danville, Virginia, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). A lifelong seeker of knowledge, he pursued a career in education teaching history and math at Luray High School. After completing his Master’s Degree in History at James Madison University he worked as Athletic Director at Luray High School before moving “across the mountain” to Dayton, Virginia to serve as Assistant Principal of Turner Ashby High School for 14 years. During his tenure at Turner Ashby, he served on the Dayton Town Council, coached Farm League baseball and Pee Wee League football, and worked on doctoral classes at the University of Virginia. After leaving Turner Ashby, he served as Principal of Bath County High School, Luray High School, and Warren County High School before retiring.

After retirement, he continued his work as a lifelong educator serving as Director of National Business College in Harrisonburg, Virginia and later as an alternative Education Teacher at Spotswood High School in Rockingham County, Virginia.

Bill spent much of his retirement gardening and traveling with his wife, Carol, with whom he visited 26 countries and 48 of the 50 the United States. He remained an eager learner, engaging in multiple Life Long Learning activities and classes offered through James Madison University. As an avid sports fan, he was a fixture at Shenandoah Valley Athletic Club events. He was an active member of Vision of Hope United Methodist Church. Having never met a stranger he loved sharing stories of his adventures and hearing stories that others shared.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of almost 55 years, Carol Anne Traylor Ingram; his son, William Stuart Ingram; daughters, Katherine Ingram McMurtry and Kimberly Anne Sheadel; daughter-in-law, Dania Ingram; sons-in-law, Derek McMurtry and Roy Sheadel; granddaughters, Leia Ingram, Gabriella Ingram, Aleisha McMurtry, Abbie McMurtry, and Elizabeth Sheadel; and many beloved nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, Virginia. A celebration of life service will be conducted on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Vision of Hope United Methodist Church, 1723 Port Republic Road, Harrisonburg VA 22801 at 12 noon following a private family burial.
