WAYNESBORO, VA (Rocktown Now) — A Waynesboro man is in custody after allegedly hitting a person with a vehicle.
Waynesboro Police say officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 13th Street and Market Avenue on Saturday, July 19, at around 7:30 in the evening.
Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian who had been allegedly struck and had sustained injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Witnesses at the scene reported that the driver, identified as Derek Bailey, a 34-year-old man from Waynesboro, had circled the area several times before the incident while antagonizing residents and engaging in verbal altercations from his vehicle.
Following a verbal confrontation with the victim, Bailey allegedly accelerated his vehicle and struck the victim. Bailey initially fled the scene but returned shortly after officers arrived. He was located in the driver’s seat of the involved vehicle and exhibited signs of impairment.
Bailey was taken into custody without incident. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to Augusta Health with non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of the investigation, Derek Bailey has been charged with the following alleged offenses:
• 18.2-51 (Felony): Malicious Wounding
• 18.2-266 (Misdemeanor): Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
• 18.2-268.3 (Misdemeanor): Refusal of a Blood or Breath Test
Bailey is currently being held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail.
