WAYNESBORO, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A Waynesboro man is in custody after police say he assaulted officers responding to a medical emergency call.

Justin Lee Hevener, 26, was arrested Sunday afternoon after officers were called to the intersection of East Main St. and Dupont Blvd. for a report of a man experiencing a medical emergency.

According to police, Hevener was involved in a physical altercation with several bystanders when officers arrived. He then attempted to flee but was unable to maintain his balance.

While waiting for the Waynesboro First Aid Crew to arrive, police say Hevener became combative with officers, resulting in minor injuries to three officers. One officer was taken to Augusta Health for evaluation.

Hevener was also transported to Augusta Health for treatment before being arrested and charged with felony assault and battery of a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor property damage.

He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail. The incident remains under investigation.
