SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that happened Tuesday evening in Shenandoah County.
Spokesman Matt Demlein says the incident happened just after six o’clock on Interstate 81 northbound at mile marker 279 in the Edinburg area.
“A 2024 Ford Explorer was travelling northbound in the left lane on Interstate 81 when it ran into a 2017 Freightliner tractor trailer that had stopped for traffic on the interstate. Traffic had stopped for a vehicle fire that occurred at the 283-mile marker. After impact, the Explorer spun across the right lane and ended up in the area between the interstate and the nearby on ramp.
Demlein added that the driver of the Explorer was ejected from the vehicle and was flown to an area hospital.
The driver, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead a short time later.
Two juvenile passengers in the Explorer were hospitalized with minor injuries.
