AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Augusta County yesterday morning.

The crash happened at 6:25 a.m. when a 1994 Ford F450 was traveling north on Route 340 when it veered into the southbound lane and struck head-on with a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, 57-year-old Terri L. Smith, of Crimora, died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Ford, 44-year-old John F. Phillips, of Broadway, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

A mechanical issue with the Ford is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
