HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community has announced that applications are now open for the second annual round of its Mary Reitz Nursing Scholarship.
The award offers up to $30,000 per year to fund nursing education for committed individuals seeking to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Registered Nurses (RNs).
“The statistics are clear. Our aging population and the retirement of so many experienced nurses mean that the call for new professionals has never been stronger,” said Rebecca Kline, Vice President of Supportive Living at VMRC. “In the U.S., job openings for RNs are projected to average 193,100 each year through 2032, yet the supply is not keeping pace. We launched our scholarship program last year and the first recipients are already charting their paths. This year, we hope to receive even more applicants who are ready to answer this critical call to service.”
Joe Hackman, Chief Philanthropy Officer at VMRC added, “Our donors believe in investing in people. The success of year one showed us what is possible. With this new scholarship round, we aim to expand the pool of talented nursing students and help build the workforce our community and country will need. We invite applicants who are ready to commit and supporters who want to make an impact to join us.”
“It’s truly remarkable and I’m very grateful,” said Daniela Ruiz, VMRC employee and one of the three inaugural recipients of the award. “I plan to go to nursing school and take care of my family. Anything I can do, I will do.”
Applications for the 2026 Nursing Scholarship are available at vmrc.org/scholarship.
